The Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership (APNEP) announced grant awards today for two projects that will advance environmental engagement and stewardship in the Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine region, which encompasses part of eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia.

APNEP-funded report indicates millions in damages if seagrasses are lost.
NC State University and Duke University have published an APNEP-funded report that estimates the market and nonmarket economic losses from declines in submerged aquatic vegetation in the Albemarle-Pamlico estuary.  Focusing on the losses to commercial and recreational fisheries, residential property values, and carbon sequestration, the team conservatively estimates aggregate losses of $1,290 per acre over the next decade.

The Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership (APNEP) has published a report showing a net loss in the extent of high-salinity submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) habitat in North Carolina’s sounds between 2006 and 2013. Also known as seagrass or underwater grasses, this valuable natural resource improves water quality, decreases shoreline erosion, and is an essential habitat for many fishery and wildlife species.
In celebration of Estuaries Week, September 19-26, 2020, six environmental and natural resources agencies from North Carolina and Virginia are releasing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that re-affirms their commitment to foster interstate collaboration within the shared waterways of the Albemarle-Pamlico region.
