Primary Focus Area: Salt marsh ecology and restoration. Research examined marsh response to sea level rise, fertilization and other environmental drivers. Studies measured shoreline erosion, primary production, Living Shoreline function, carbon sequestration
Secondary Focus Area(s): Estuarine and coastal food webs
Career Experiences: Was team lead at NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Beaufort laboratory, directing research investigating estuarine ecosystem structure, function and response to environmental change. Adjunct faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill, serving on graduate student committees. Conducted field research in North Carolina, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, California, Alaska and Hawaii. Associate Editor at Estuaries and Coasts 2010-2021. Participated in NC Coastal Habitat Protection Plan panels on wetlands habitats, Natural Working Lands group on wetlands and carbon sequestration, North Carolina Living Shoreline research committee, North Carolina Sentinel Site Core Management Team, NOAA Blue Carbon Team.
