STAC Member Since: September 2023

Title: Research Assistant Professor

Department: Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences, Institute of Marine Sciences

Organization: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Education: PhD Marine Sciences, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 2009; BS Biology, Duke University, Cum Laude 1998

Primary Focus Area: Eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, phytoplankton ecology and aquatic biogeochemistry

Secondary Focus Area(s): Optical characteristics of coastal waters

Career Experiences: I have been part of and/or led several research programs that utilized a combination of field measurements and simple models to understand the interactive effects of nutrients and physical factors (e.g. advection, vertical mixing) on phytoplankton biomass and community composition. These studies have been conducted across a wide range of aquatic environments from inland rivers and reservoirs to estuaries within the Albemarle Pamlico Sound system. Recently, I have led a study to model light attenuation within NC coastal waters to develop targets for suspended sediments and phytoplankton biomass concentrations that will provide sufficient light for maintaining or restoring healthy submerged aquatic vegetation habitats.
