Career Experiences: Randall Etheridge has joint faculty appointments in the Department of Engineering and Center for Sustainability at East Carolina University. Etheridge is an ecological engineer with most of his experience in coastal areas. His research focuses on the use of natural biogeochemical processes to reduce the impact of human actions on coastal waters. He is particularly interested in how changes in agricultural water management strategies can be used to improve water quality and the use of ecosystem restoration to reduce eutrophication. Etheridge’s lab uses optical instruments to measure nutrient concentrations multiple times per hour in dynamic coastal systems to further improve our knowledge of the factors that influence nutrient fluxes. His research is funded by the National Science Foundation, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and other funding sources.
