EPA awarded the DEQ Brownfields Redevelopment Section a $2 million MARC grant to complete site assessments in three historically disadvantaged areas of the state. It will work with our partner communities and contractors to complete these tasks and encourage productive reuse within disadvantaged communities.
Pursuant to Section 205(j)/604(b) of the Clean Water Act, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Resources (DWR) is currently seeking proposals for water quality planning projects using federal fiscal year 2026 grant funds.
The North Carolina Arboretum is currently accepting applications for the 2026-2027 year for Project EXPLORE: a teacher mini-grant program to promote community science in schools! This program is open to ALL North Carolina K-12 teachers who are interested in getting their students outside doing hands-on scientific data collection and reporting. It offers a mini-grant, materials, support from a local environmental educator, and curriculum-based programming correlated to the NC state standards.
APNEP partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, N.C. Division of Water Resources, and N.C. Water Resources to maintain a river monitoring station near Oak City on the Roanoke River during a budget shortfall in 2013-2014.
From 2014-2015 APNEP provided bridge funding for the ModMon project, which has been collecting and analyzing water quality on the Neuse River Estuary since 1994.
In 2018 and 2020 APNEP provided funding to Sound Rivers to initiate a citizen science water quality monitoring program called Swim Guide.
From 2015-2020 APNEP funded DMF's Recreational Water Quality Monitoring Program in the Albemarle-Pamlico region.

APNEP has partnered with a diverse group of stakeholders involved in growing, harvesting, studying, managing and eating oysters to protect and restore North Carolina's oyster habitats and fishery.
Underwater grasses, also known as submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), are a critical nursery habitat for many aquatic creatures and help to improve water quality. These underwater meadows are one of North Carolina's most valuable, and fragile, aquatic resources. APNEP works to protect SAV from water quality and disturbance issues that threaten it.
